Sony IMX318 Announced With 22.5-megapixel Resolution
The IMX318 is a successor to the much-upraised IMX230 that was utilized in Sony’s Xperia Z5, a phone that is believed to sport one of the best cameras out there, as well as on other phones like Moto X Style and Moto X Force. With this, the image sensor achieves a compact, type 1/2.6 size suitable for inclusion into smartphones, while still realizing a high resolution of 22.5 effective megapixels, among the top in the industry.

Sony adds that the IMX318 includes industry’s smallest unit pixels, which measure 1.0um, due to which the image sensor boasts a compact size while retaining the 22.5 effective megapixels. This new Exmor RS is the industry’s first to be equipped with built-in high-speed hybrid autofocus, as fast as 0.03 seconds, and built-in 3-axis electronic image stabilization technology for video.
Sony on Tuesday revealed its new IMX318 CMOS Exmor RS image sensor for smartphones. The Exmor IMX318 is the company’s latest innovation when it comes to smartphone camera tech, which introduces a number of new features.
“As smartphones grow ever thinner, so too are image sensors growing increasingly more compact”. When it comes to videos, the sensor can focus as quick as 0.017 seconds during 60fps shooting which could become one of its selling point given the size.
As well as superior photos, the new sensor will allow for 4K recording at 30fps (frames per second), while 1080p and 720p offer 120fps and 240fps, respectively. The functionality is built directly “into its internal signal processor”, Sony says, and it uses info from an external gyro sensor. The IMX318 will be available to Sony’s OEM partners starting in May of this year at a sample price of 2000 yen, approximately $17.50.
