During the searches executed by the police, computer equipment and mobile phones were seized which are now being examined by authorities.

The 10 men taken into custody were believed to have recruitment ties to “Islamic State” (IS) in Syria.

The 10 were arrested during raids in Molenbeek and others areas of the Belgian capital but the case is not linked to the deadly November Paris attacks, the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Ten individuals were detained for questioning in Belgium, the country’s federal prosecutor’s office confirmed in a statement, on suspicion of links to an Islamic State recruiting network. They resulted from evidence the judge had regarding several people from Belgium who went to Syria to become jihadi fighters.

Four of the Paris attackers, including suspected ringleader Abdelhamid Abaooud, lived in Molenbeek.

The newspaper added that an investigating magistrate would decide later in the day whether their detention should be extended and charges brought.
