FedEx Express (FX, Memphis Int’l) is to acquire one hundred new B767-300(F)s from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O’Hare) constituting fifty firm orders with options for an additional fifty of the same type.

That order is valued at more than $1.5 billion at list prices, though Avitas data pegs the real value after discounts at about $840 million. Bronczek, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Express. Weak demand, overcapacity and competition from the belly space of passenger planes has driven down yields and reduced the need for dedicated freighters. FedEx did not announce any 777F orders.

The contract is also the single-largest order for 767s in the history of the program, allowing Boeing to extend the aircraft’s production line well into the next decade.

“We’re pleased that FedEx has chosen the 767 Freighter and appreciate their confidence in the airplane”, Boeing says.

“I will only say, the terms are very favorable”, said FedEx spokesman Jess Bunn.

The 767Fs will replace a number of older freighters, including Boeing MD10s and MD11s as well as Airbus Group A300-600s and A310s, which FedEx plans to retire in the coming years.
