Deadpool Breaks February and R-rated Opening Records

It has earned the accolade of having the biggest opening weekend in R-Rated movie history in the USA, making it a worthy risk for Twentieth Century Fox, with a sequel already greenlit and heading into writing stages.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals the film smashed the record for a President’s Day Weekend opening in North America, taking in a whopping £104 million in United States cinemas alone, compared to Fifty Shades of Grey’s £64.7 million a year ago.

Saying that it’s more than just the producers or the filmmakers – it’s also Marvel, licensors and many others who play a role in crafting a movie like X-Men Origins, the video (originally released in 2013, but circulating again now) admits openly “this is not that character”, and said it was the studio setting up Deadpool for later.

Kinberg thinks addition of the time-travelling mutant Cable – Deadpool’s friend and foe in the comic books – would be flawless for another movie which could focus on alternative X-Men squad the X-Force.

Far behind in second place was Kung Fu Panda 3 – Dreamworks’ computer-animated comedy that follows the adventures of Po as he evolves from martial arts student to teacher – which took in US$25.9 million.

“Throughout the campaign, we were consistent with the key message that was the wit and sarcasm of Deadpool that reflected in all our communication, be it digital media, publicity or above and below the line campaigns”.

By the end of the holiday weekend, experts were anticipating that the Fox film could go on to generate $150 million. McClintock said Reynolds wasn’t really happy with the way Deadpool was portrayed in the X-Men films.

R-rated romantic comedy Hot to Be Single opened in 3rd with $17.9 million, $19.9 million including Monday. That’s pretty damn bad, more than 14 years of inflation and Zoolander 2 still couldn’t match the $15.5 million 3-day start of the original. It can be recounted last Thursday that the Tim Miller-directed film was predicted to make only $80 million during the three days.
