A 23-year-old British woman has died in a bungee jumping accident in Spain.

According to the BBC, a police spokesman said that the woman’s aunt had been watching her as she took part in the jump from Tablate Bridge when the incident took place.

Confirming the death, the Foreign Office said: “We are liaising with the Spanish authorities and have ed the family to offer support at this hard time”.

It added it was “ready to provide consular assistance”.

A source said: “The woman was still tied to the rope when rescuers reached her. That would appear to point to a miscalculation involving the rope or that something’s happened to the rope as she jumped”.

Kleyo De Abreu, 23, was killed at about 15:00 BST on Tuesday in Lanjaron, Granada, according to the Guardia Civil.

Ms De Abreu was reportedly being watched by her aunt when the accident happened.

Tablate Bridge has a drop of 262 feet, and is a popular bungee-jumping site used by several adventure sports firms.

One website claims that bungee jumping from the bridge is a “hair-raising” experience due to the closeness of the ravine walls during the fall.

Lanjarón is about 46km from Granada on the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is famous in Spain for its mineral water.

One company boasts alongside pictures and videos of the bridge “If you want a huge dosis of adrenaline, this is your bridge”.
