Diesel may be a dirty word for some but for the major automakers, especially those with a significant presence in fuel-conscious Europe, it commands a lot of importance. We’re told noise, vibration and harshness are also all lower. It takes advantage of the fourth-gen common rail injection and has received steel pistons with stepped combustion bowls along with NANOSLIDE cylinder coating.

As the new generation of E-Class has been unveiled in Detroit last week, Mercedes has confirmed that Edition E will be the last variant for E-Class luxury sedan series. The maximum torque now stands at 295 pound-feet (400 Newton meters) and the engine has been mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. CO2 emission on the Mercedes OM-654 engine varies between 112 and 102 g/km. The E 220d will deliver the 62 miles per hour (100 km/h) run in 7.3 seconds and will continue to rumble until up to 149 miles per hour (240 km/h).

Fuel efficiency stands at between 4.7 to 4.3 liters per 100 km in city limits going down to 4.1 to 3.6 liters on the highway while in combined cycle, fuel efficiency will stand at 4.3 to 3.9 liters per 100 km.

The new engine is created to meet worldwide harmonized light vehicle test procedures (WLTP) and future Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test protocols, as well as all current measurement standards.

The company plans to offer several output variants based on the same architecture, accommodating both longitudinal and transverse installations for front-, rear- or all-wheel drive vehicles. Only limited units of Edition E are expected to arrive for Indian market and further specs and design details are expected to be unleashed at launch which will be held at Mercedes-Benz plant Pune.
