Tornados, snow, sleet in East; record heat in West

Showers are expected Wednesday evening, which will dissipate late Thursday morning.

Monday’s snow began overnight and continued through the afternoon, with up to 8 inches of snow in the hardest-hit areas. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.2 to 0.4 of an inch possible.

A storm system will affect the region starting Monday afternoon and continuing into Monday night and Tuesday, according to the NWS. Many schools were closed or delayed openings.

That would be the earliest 90-degree day on record for the city.

The National Weather Service says motorists across much of Vermont, New Hampshire and ME could be in for a tough commute on the first day back at work after the holiday weekend.

In southeastern New Jersey, temperatures have already risen above freezing and precipitation was mixing as of 4 p.m. A changeover to rain should occur by about 7 p.m. A light rain fell on cold ground to create patches of ice that led to people slipping and cars sliding.

Storm Team4 meteorologist Chuck Bell said some residents may still encounter slick roads and sidewalks, but conditions should improve as the weather warms up. San Diego’s high of 89 was eight degrees above the 1981 record. State police say there was freezing rain at the time but the causes of the crashes are being investigated.
