The Arizona Cardinals have signed Joel Wilkinson from the AFL in Australia, it was announced on Tuesday.
Hayne’s San Francisco 49ers and the Cardinals are major rivals in the NFC West conference, playing each other twice a year in the regular season.
Hayne had a mixed first season with the 49ers after securing a place on the team’s 53-man roster, where he was used as a running back and special teams kick returner.
Wilkinson, 24, retired as an AFL player to pursue an National Football League career as a cornerback.
He was eventually demoted to the practice squad but has vowed to try return in 2016 to win back a place in the squad.
The Nigeria-born defender, who stands at 186 centimetres tall, made 26 appearances for the Suns between 2011 and 2013 and he also played for the Northern Blues in the VFL.
