Earlier this week he said: “If it (racism) happens in the World Cup, it will be really gross and really ugly”.

Spartak have been fined 20,000 rubles (€322) for fans throwing objects onto the field, but have escaped any punishment in regards to Frimpong’s allegations. “I used to get mad but now I just blow kisses to the ones who try to offend him”.

He later said on Twitter that he had been “racially abused for the game that I love”. The referee was cleared by a Russian Football Union (RFU) panel, which ruled there was insufficient evidence.
