They chose to take the lump sum payout of $328 million before taxes.
Powerball officials drew the winning numbers Wednesday night in a $189 million lottery as the twice-weekly game continues to build more than a month after the richest drawing in history.
The winning numbers were 4, 8, 19, 27 and 34, drawn from five white balls, and 10 as the “Powerball” number on a red ball.
“They are numbers that I played for years that I very rarely play”, she told reporters Wednesday.
“We are going to take care of family and we have a lot to think about”. And yet three people defied those odds for the $1.5 billion jackpot and walked away winners. “We just kept quiet”.
Two former Long Islanders who won a third of last month’s Powerball jackpot said they played the same numbers for 30 years – so long they can no longer remember their significance.
It is now also possible to buy tickets online from anywhere in the world and have winnings paid directly into a chosen bank account, while major prizes can even be collected in person.
They both expressed concern about the downsides of winning, with Smith saying it’s “scary” and that she’s been “dreading” the public acceptance today. “I just know I want to help the special people in my life”, Smith said, reports NBC News.
If ever a couple looked uncomfortable telling everybody they were millionaires hundreds of times over, it was these two. They declined to state how many children they had or their ages. They opted for $327.8 million lump-sum option of their $528.7 million share.

The second winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California.
