HUD allocates $4.1M for affordable housing for Native Americans in Utah

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe will receive a $2 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The amount of each grant is based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units under management by the tribe or designated entity.

This year the ICDBG Program will distribute .5 million to 75 Native American communities across 21 states.

Five Butte and Glenn county American Indian tribes have received almost $3 million for affordable housing projects from the federal government. The money helps low-income residents on reservations or in other Native American or Native Alaskan communities.

In central NY, the Oneida Nation in Verona will receive $824,219 and the Cayuga Nation of NY in Seneca Falls has been awarded a $386,052 grant. The funds may be used for housing development, housing services to eligible people, housing management services and crime prevention and safety. Each tribe was required to submit a housing plan to be eligible to receive federal funds.

“The goal of the ICDBG program is to develop viable Indian and Alaska Native communities, including decent housing, suitable living environments, and economic opportunities”, said HUD Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez.

Some of that money is also going to the Eastern Shoshone Housing Authority to extensively rehabilitate 116 housing units on the reservation.
