In the eastern USA on Monday, a day after record low temperatures plunged several states into a deep freeze, snow, freezing rain and sleet were pummeling the region. Pugh told The Associated Press that he and other neighbors used a chain saw to free a 94-year-old woman, stuck under a twisted metal door and other debris of her home. And much of the East Coast shivered through bitter cold and snow.

She appeared to have minor injuries, but was taken to a hospital as a precaution because of her age, authorities said.

Emergency management officials also reported a destroyed mobile home in Lincoln County, Mississippi, while a gas station and some homes were damaged in Sylvarena in Smith County. Authorities say more than a dozen homes were destroyed in both states.

The National Weather Service says motorists across much of Vermont, New Hampshire and ME could be in for a tough commute as they return to work after the long holiday weekend.

An active storm system in the Southeast has produced several occurrences of severe weather Monday, including a likely tornado impacting parts of the western Florida Panhandle.

No injuries were reported, authorities said. 2 homes were completely destroyed while 20 others were damaged.

Pensacola news station WEAR-TV showed a large, black funnel cloud touching down on a highway near the town, and images submitted by viewers to the news station’s Facebook page showed downed trees and damage to the exteriors of at least two homes.

A tornado watch is in effect for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties until 9 p.m., and a tornado warning was in effect until 4 p.m.

Messy snow, sleet and freezing rain made driving hazardous around the Northeast.

In Phoenix, Arizona, the fire department took note of the warmth by issuing safety tips associated with hot weather – such as not leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles, staying hydrated, and scheduling outdoor activities during the cooler hours of the morning and evening.
