The LG G5 May be the World’s First Proper Modular Smartphone

Yesterday we showed you a couple of LG G5 photos, and today the LG G5 Magic Slot is on display thanks to a mysterious new photograph. The report adds that the flagship smartphone as seen in a recent mock-up image will be featuring a “Magic Slot” at the bottom that can be swapped out. Renowned leakster Evan Blass has claimed the LG G5 will debut as a modular handset alongside several “plug-in modules and bespoke accessories”.

The attached module in the leaked image is rather large though the report could not confirm what it actually is.

From what we know so far, there’s just two modules compatible with the technology which will be announced alongside the G5 this weekend in Barcelona; a battery grip for photography and a high-quality digital audio converter (DAC) for improved sound.

Sources tell Venture Beat that these accessories are created to extend the functionality of LG’s upcoming device, and will be controlled through an app known as “LG Friends Manager”.

The battery grip will be launched as LG Cam Plus and will enhance users’ grip on the phone when taking pictures, but it will also provide them with hardware buttons for various functions, like zoom, flash, and shutter.

How exactly these modules will plug into the LG G5 is still a little unclear. Besides improving the native sound experience, the Hi-Fi Plus is also said to enhance audio routed through it from other connected Android devices or PCs.

As well as modules that can connect to the handset itself, it’s reported that LG will also show off an LG 360 Cam, which can record stills and video at 16MP in 360-degrees. Finally, LG is allegedly working on a Rolling Bot drone that you control with your phone.
