Video game developer Treyarch and publisher Activision are announcing that the long-awaited multiplayer beta period for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is set to be first launched on Wednesday, August 19 for gamers on the PlayStation 4, who will be able to test the core mechanics until Sunday, August 23. The beta will not be available on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, though the game is expected to release on both last-gen consoles in November. Gamers also got the official prequel to “Call of Duty: Black Ops III“, an exclusive Mega Blocks CoD figurine, plus a code to an online sweepstakes for a chance to be a Black Ops zombie.

This is the first Call of Duty game since World at War to receive a beta, which Treyarch and Activision hope to use to instill more consumer confidence in the Call of Duty brand.

Details about what’s coming in the beta-maps, modes, that sort of thing-will be revealed “in the weeks ahead”.

The move toward holding a beta for Black Ops 3 is likely due, in part, to Call of Duty’s decreasing sales numbers over the last few years.
