“I’ve been on record saying I’m a sore loser, who likes to lose?” “I said we’re going to give Peyton plenty of time to think about what he wants to do”. We’ve got all these people that’s condemning and saying, ‘Ah man, I wouldn’t have done that, ‘ this and the third…I’m not here to win a popularity contest.

The Denver Broncos’ defence was so dominant this season that part of the prelude to a Super Bowl – in which they were the underdogs – included in-depth discussions about what their nickname should be if the team managed to win.

Asked if it bothered him that people had taken offence, he replied: “That’s cool”.

“I don’t want to say we accept it, but we know who he is”, Rivera said. While Newton’s actions may seem like validation for some who think he’s entirely too jovial when he’s winning, and not gracious enough when he’s losing, please remember one thing: athletes are human.

“Losing is hard. You can go talk to whoever you want, until you’ve lost this game and sat on this stage… you have no idea what that feels like to get peppered with questions about how your played or how your team played”.

“I’ve seen numerous quarterbacks throw interceptions, and their effort afterwards, they don’t go. I never proclaimed that I was flawless”, he said.

Newton said he might have gotten hurt. But Archie said Peyton texted Sean Payton and Drew Brees from the locker room that night.

“I don’t think that Johnny Football’s days are over in the National Football League. I am my own person”, Newton explained reported by NFL.com.

“I don’t dive on one fumble because the way my leg was – it could have been (contorted) in a way”.

Head coach, Ron Rivera, also defended his quarterback on Tuesday, stating, “Do I wish Cam would’ve handled it differently? Yes”.

“I’ll take some time to reflect”, Manning said Sunday. But we didn’t lose that game because of that fumble.

Newton said his emotions were raw after the game and he simply didn’t want to talk to the media. “I mean that. We will be back”.

Cam Newton was named the NFL's MVP for leading the Carolina Panthers to a 15–1 mark this past season
