‘Jurassic World’ roars past ‘Avengers’ for #3 on all-time box office list

Universal has yet to announce plans for Jurassic World 2, but a sequel is all but guaranteed. The film has been a runaway hit, spending a few weekends at #1 (which isn’t easy in today’s crowded summer release calendar), and now it’s officially even bigger.

Universal’s “Jurassic World” has officially become the third-highest grossing film of all time ahead of Marvel’s “The Avengers“.

That means the only two films to have done better at the worldwide box office are James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster “Avatar” with $2.78 billion, and his 1997 disaster epic “Titanic“, with $2.18 billion. Moviegoers have rediscovered their appreciation for 3D releases, with 3D screenings for the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, San Andreas, and Jurassic World drawing more than 40 percent of their opening weekend business from those showings.

The Avengers has been the third highest-grossing film since it came out in 2012, pulling in 1.52 billion at the global box office.

Now, these figures don’t adjust for inflation (Jurassic World checks in at No. 28 on the domestic list), but that’s still – BREAKING NEWS – a lot of scratch. There’s a good chance Jurassic World will end up besting Marvel Studios’ superhero team in the US before it leaves theaters.
