By Tuesday, when temperatures increase, Sullivan said the rain and some runoff could cause flooding in some areas.

Keep your shovel at the ready: The climb out of the deep freeze will come with a mix of snow and freezing rain overnight. South Jersey was expected to see little if any accumulations, while the most snow was expected in northern areas.

In several Northeastern cities – including New York, Boston and Hartford, Connecticut – temperatures had dipped Sunday below zero, falling to minus 40 on Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Rain will taper Tuesday evening.

Gusty winds later Friday into Friday night could reach advisory levels.

While the Northeast endures bitter cold, snow and icy rain, some Western states are coping with record warmth.
