Jim Harbaugh putting Michigan’s spring game under the lights

MI football is switching up its normal schedule for the Spring Football Game by placing it on a Friday night instead of Saturday afternoon. MI usually plays the Spring Game on a Saturday afternoon. “I think we need to be very cautious of that”.

During the school’s upcoming vacation, coach Jim Harbaugh plans to take his team to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to conduct spring practices.

That was the message Friday from NCAA president Mark Emmert as he met with the USC Board of Trustees.

It’s not an added amount of time. Rather, a rule change would have to take place at the appropriate time with the appropriate discussion. There now is a rule prohibiting athletes from spending more than 20 hours per week on responsibilities related to their sports, but several college administrators have acknowledged the rule is hard to follow and multiple surveys of college athletes have suggested most college athletes spend more time than that on their sport. “It’s the spring season when you’re allowed to do that”.

“There’s a lot of teams that travel to the state of Florida, to Arizona, softball team, baseball teams, and I bet if you researched, I bet some of those teams do that in their offseason, the fall”, Harbaugh said. But his venture into rival recruiting territory previously drew criticism from SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and ACC commissioner John Swofford.

“I think the NCAA needs to look at that, yes”, Swofford said.

The Wolverines will head to Florida in less than 10 days to open spring ball. He’s working to rebuild the MI football program and brand, and he’s thinking outside of the box to do so. MI will have four practices at IMG Academy before returning Ann Arbor to finish the period.

Clemson will also not practice during the school’s spring break, but will hold its spring game on April 9, the last day of the break.
