At the event, Bush, 63, the son and brother of former presidents, sounded a note of frustration at frequent criticism of his campaign by TV pundits.

Attacks between Trump and Cruz have intensified this week.

The feud between the two candidates vying for their party’s presidential nomination escalated on Wednesday, when Cruz held an extended press conference in which he derided Trump and his other main rival, Sen.

Trump threatened earlier in the week to bring a defamation lawsuit against Cruz over a television ad that attacks the Republican front-runner’s conservative bona fides.

The legal battle marked the latest escalation in the ongoing feud between Trump and Cruz.

“‘When we have our time together, we talk to our friends who are part of the legal establishment”, he said.

“But if Donald Trump files the lawsuit that he threatens, that lawsuit will be frivolous”, Cruz added.

Ted Cruz has inched ahead of Donald Trump in a new national poll released Wednesday, the first national poll of the 2016 cycle that shows the Texas senator on top of the Republican field.

He also argued that it was wrong to say George W. Bush kept the country safe during his presidency.

More than one-quarter of the likely GOP primary voters, 28 percent, said Cruz was best able to deal with social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage.

“You have been threatening frivolous lawsuits for your entire adult life”, Cruz said, speaking directly to Trump.

“No, I mean, sir, on the more national level to the extent that you can”, Villinger said, urging the candidate to talk more about his policy proposals in the next debate.

“He is a liar and these ads and statements made by Cruz are clearly desperate moves by a guy who is tanking in the polls – watching his campaign go up in flames finally explains Cruz’s logo”, Trump said, in a reference to the flame included in Cruz’s campaign logo.

A Bush aide said Haley called Bush to inform him of her plan to endorse Rubio.

But Trump also suggested Tuesday that he would temper his comments on social media should he become president. “I want a fighter at the end of the day – someone who’s going to hold Republicans accountable – and I want someone who’s really going to make a difference, not just for our party, but for everyone they represent”.

“We need to look as far and as wide as possible because we may find a jewel out there that may not be completely obvious”, Clovis said.
