Channing Frye Coming To Cleveland: Trade Details

Cleveland, which lost to Golden State in last year’s NBA Finals despite a superb effort from LeBron James, obtained Frye from Orlando in a three-team deal that saw Brazilian center Anderson Varejao and a first-round NBA Draft pick go to Portland for a second round pick that was sent to the Magic along with guard Jared Cunningham. Sports reports the Blazers “will likely waive” Varejao, though.

New Cavaliers big man Channing Frye watched but did not participate in practice Friday, though coach Tyronn Lue made it sound like he still plans to use him Sunday against Oklahoma City.

Portland, meanwhile, will reportedly receive a protected first-round pick in exchange for taking on Anderson Varejao’s hefty contract. Frye is 32 years old, and was recently phased out of Orlando’s rotation in favor of more dynamic, versatile players.

The Hawks traded point guard Shelvin Mack to the Jazz for a second-round draft pick.

Green has played 53 games with the Grizzlies this season and is averaging 12.2 points per game with 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists. The Cavaliers now enter the playoff push with no major weak links in their group of bigs: They’re capable of matching up against traditional teams (Mozgov at the 5) and small-ball looks (Thompson, Love or Frye at the 5) alike while also creating matchup concerns for their opponents with their shooter-heavy combination (Love and Frye together). The Magic would prefer that so they don’t have to take back any salary.

The people told The Associated Press the teams reached agreement on the trade at the trade deadline.

For the last one and half years he is with the Orlando Magic.

The post Cavaliers trade veteran Anderson Varejao, acquire Channing Frye appeared first on Chronicle-Telegram.

General Manager David Griffin surgically cut a little bit of the heart out of the Cavaliers on February 18 in a trade he hopes will make the team better for the playoffs. Jamal Crawford is the next logical inclusion in any trade negotiations-the core 4 are more valuable, Austin Rivers has a de facto no-trade clause, Doc Rivers is unlikely to move Paul Pierce’s 3-year deal, and the rest of the role players are on minimum salaries, which are basically useless in trades.

The very definition of a “stretch-4”, Frye comes to Cleveland averaging 9.3 points and 4.9 boards for his career.

In their desperation to rid themselves of Lance Stephenson, the Los Angeles Clippers came close to trading for the aforementioned Frye on Wednesday.

Varejao was a hard worker ever since he joined Cleveland in 2004 (Scott Halleran/Getty Images). He spent much of last season recovering from a torn Achilles. He averaged 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds for the Magic.

“It was something we thought would be unfair, but we did ask their feelings for Channing”, Griffin said.
