Following Saturday’s events, Democrats will head to SC for that state’s Democratic primary.

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are still in a close race for second place in the South Carolina Republican primary, based on analysis of the vote so far.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Ohio Gov. John Kasich battled for fourth place. A recent CNN/ORC survey indicated that Trump held 45 percent of the vote among likely caucus-goers there, followed by Rubio in second place with 19 percent and Cruz with 17 percent.

Looking to right his campaign’s ship, he sought to beat expectations in SC, which powered his father George H.W. Bush and brother George W. Bush to the GOP nomination in 1988 and 2000, respectively.

Supporters of Sen. Marco Rubio, who is now tied for second as votes continue to roll in, cheered loudly at his victory party in Columbia, as Bush announced the end of his campaign.

“Tonight, I am suspending my campaign”, Bush said after a disappointing showing in South Carolina’s Republican primary, appearing to fight back tears.

Mr. Bush had flirted with a run for years, despite his mother, former first lady Barbara Bush, saying he shouldn’t do it. She said the country should move on from her famous family. Since 1980, only one candidate has not won the Republican nomination for president without first winning in SC.

The lovely landscape of SC hosted some really nasty political insults.

“But the people of Iowa, New Hampshire and SC have spoken”.

At numerous times on the campaign trail, Bush has been critical of Trump and said he’s not a viable candidate.

With South Carolina done, the GOP candidates head to Nevada.

On CBSN, CBS News director of elections Anthony Salvanto said “Trump has a steady, if not large lead, everywhere and that adds up to a win”.

Trump also predicted that as Jeb Bush and eventually other Republican candidates drop out, many of their supporters will switch to his side.
