Marco Rubio and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, two establishment candidates who both hope the outcome will allow them to lock up the more traditional Republican voters they have been courting.

The former Florida governor – son of one president and brother of another – started his campaign as the odds-on favourite to win the Republican presidential nomination, backed by a prodigious political brain trust and millions of dollars in donations from private and corporate supporters.

The New York billionaire real-estate developer and reality-TV star is a step closer to, as he puts it, “running the table”. Bush never compromised his campaign by becoming some kind of freak show barker for the sake of keeping up with the circus the GOP race has become.

Just over half of South Carolina GOP primary voters said immigrants who are living in the country illegally should be offered a chance to apply for legal status, and those voters tended to prefer Rubio.
