New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony “Surprised” by Derek Fisher Firing
Jackson, who is nearing his two-year anniversary at the helm of the team, said he remains committed to building the Knicks into a top contender.

NY is a logical destination because Knicks basketball chief Phil Jackson coached the Lakers during Walton’s playing days in Los Angeles. Yahoo Sports firmly believes that it’s going to happen sooner rather than later, and it’s picked up speed as talk of hiring Luke Walton as coach of the Lakers has come about.
Brian Shaw now is doing commentary for NBA TV, but his eye isn’t too far from the Knicks situation. This summer the Knicks added Kristaps Porzingis, Arron Afflalo, and Robin Lopez to the lineup.
“Carmelo is the leader”, Jackson said. Well, then again, the 34-year-old Spaniard had been in trade rumors since last season and still he is the unquestionable starter of the now Kurt Rambis-led NY squad. He was involved in a fight with Memphis Grizzlies forward and former teammate Matt Barnes when he was at the home of Barnes’ estranged wife in California. But a league spokesman says there has been no rule change, only that league officials are discussing how the play should be interpreted. Fisher played under Jackson for several years as a point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.
“This is something I didn’t see coming, [that] nobody saw coming”, Anthony said via ESPN, referring to Jackson’s decision to fire Derek Fisher. “You could feel there was so much pressure on him and I don’t know if he was the same way with the players, but just (a) different guy”, Albert said.
“He’s a phenomenal human being and a great coach”, Kerr said.
Jackson did respond in a report by Stefan Bondy for the New York Daily News, noting that the coach has to “match the style” of how they do things.
“This is a very talented team with strong character and I am confident they will succeed”, Fisher said in a statement.
Bearing all this in mind, who are the likely and/or most deserving candidates for the New York Knicks’ head coaching job? Their 21-61 record last season was the worst in franchise history.
