Seven people have been rushed to hospital after they were caught in an avalanche near Golden, B.C. late Sunday morning. It’s what makes B.C.so remarkable.

The Golden-Field RCMP has confirmed that a fatal avalanche occurred in the Quartz Creek area West of Golden on Saturday Feb. 20.

On Sunday, a second avalanche struck a group of 13 skiers, near Esplanade Mountain, leaving several injured, one critically and one seriously, but with no immediate fatalities.

Deborah Tetley with STARS Air Ambulance says a helicopter was dispatched from Calgary to pick up a patient who was in critical condition following the avalanche, and bring the patient back to Calgary.

This weekend, Avalanche Canada also issued a “special warning” for the region, saying heavy snowfalls, including more than 50 centimetres that fell near Golden, followed by sunny days, would elevate the avalanche risk.

He said the Canadian Avalanche Centre does its best to warn people of poor conditions.

The five victims, all men from Alberta ranging in age from their early 40s to early 60s, died January 29 near McBride.
