Police don’t know if cops fired shots that injured officers

The NYPD did not provide an update on the suspect’s condition. Two police officers were shot in a confrontation with Funes, early Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, who slammed his auto into a police vehicle. During the melee, the two police officers from the 81st Precinct anti-crime team were hit by gunfire – one officer, struck in the chest while wearing his bulletproof vest, suffered blunt-force trauma, but the bullet didn’t penetrate, Bratton said.

“The bottom line today: Thank God, these officers will be making a full recovery”, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a press conference, according to the New York Daily News.

The NYPD tweeted a photo of the revolver recovered from a auto at the scene.

The suspect, identified as Jamal Funes, 34, was also struck multiple times and was listed in critical condition Saturday morning at Brookdale Hospital, Bratton said. Reddin is in stable condition now, and Yurkiw, who has been on the force for three years, has been released from the hospital.

Speeding through the streets of Bedford Stuyvesant, Funes shot at cops from his vehicle. “And these officers pursued their work last night with vigor, with focus, these are very dedicated officers who were out there protecting us”.

In October, Officer Randolph Holder was shot and killed by a suspected bicycle thief he was chasing.

The officers fired at the suspect, striking him several times. The officers followed the vehicle and called for back-up.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department said the notification was made as a precaution while investigators continue to try to piece together exactly what happened early Saturday morning.

During the engagement, the two police officers were struck by gunfire, police said.

Reddin’s older sister, Jennifer Reddin-Eliou, said her brother lives in Lynbrook with his wife, who is pregnant, and two sons, 3 and 5.

Traveling the wrong way up the street near the intersection of Lexington Ave and Malcolm X Boulevard, Funes then allegedly rammed into a marked police vehicle, Bratton said. He also said police did not yet know the “extent” of Funes’s connection to New Jersey or where he may be living in New Jersey. Both were alert at the hospital, Bratton said.
