“Winning in Doha made me really happy, especially since I’m not used to competing indoors”.
“I was ready to jump 4.80m, but even 4.70m, a new absolute area record, is a very satisfying result”, said the 5-foot11 Li, as per the IAAF’s official website.
“I just gave it a shot, it was good”.
The women’s 60m title went to Kazakhstan’s Viktoriya Zyabkina, who beat China’s Yuan Qiqi in a photo-finish after both were given the same time of 7.27.
In the eagerly-awaited race of the last day, Qatari men shaved nearly five seconds off the previous Asian Indoor Championships record to win the 4X400m relay race.
Thao’s best performance was in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore previous year with a 6.65m jump won a silver medal.
It was the fourth time that the 24-year-old – who will be Qatar’s biggest hope in Rio later this year of claiming the Gulf country’s first ever Olympic gold medal – has won the indoor crown at these championships. “But still, I was able to stay close behind him and make the final kick in the last lap”, said a delighted Al Garni.
Kuwait’s Abdulazeez Almandeel won the men’s 60M hurdles with a new Asian Indoor Record (7.60sec) at the Aspire Dome.
Bahrain’s Marta Hirpato Yota won the women’s 800M title with a time of 2mins 4.59sec. And Zhang Yaoguang won the Long Jump with a leap of 7.99m to hold off India’s Prem Kumar Kumaravel who leapt 7.92m.
