Teen tweets unseen photos showing Nirvana’s ‘first ever’ gig

At this point, it would seem like every Nirvana artifact has been uncovered, but leave it to a teenage girl to send fans into a tizzy after sharing never before seen photos from the band’s very first gig.

Posting the images to Twitter, Poukkula wrote: “Pictures of my dad and Kurt Cobain playing together back in the day”.

Maggie Poukkula is the daughter of Tony Poukkula, a Seattle musician whose house was the site of the March 1987 concert in Raymond, Washington. “I’d have to ask my dad”. Tony Poukkula is the long-haired chap featured in the top photograph, with Cobain and Krist Novoselic featured in the others.

While Maggie was initially unsure if the images were in fact from the first Nirvana show – “I’m not sure”.

Legend has it that Cobain and company got only a lukewarm reception as they performed early Nirvana songs “Hairspray Queen” and “Downer“. However, considering it was a drunken house party, that’s understandable.

According to Nirvana Guide, Kurt Cobain reported that Nirvana played Flipper’s “Sex Bomb” for 30 to 60 minutes at their first show, but this was probably one of Kurt’s fabrications.

“Nirvana”, which included some of the band’s biggest singles (‘Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Come As You Are”) as well as the then-unheard “You Know You’re Right’ upon its release, will be available in both standard and deluxe versions from August 28.
