Hazlewood: “Who the f*** is the third umpire?”

The fast bowler pleaded guilty later to showing dissent, a team spokesperson said.

With New Zealand battling to construct a second innings lead within the first session on the fourth day, Hazlewood was satisfied he had trapped Kane Williamson lbw just for umpire Ranmore Martinesz to disclaim the attraction. Smith immediately referred it, the third umpire Richard Illingworth looked convinced it was out after a couple of replays but another hot spot replay showed a faint edge at the toe of the bat and Illingworth asked the onfield umpire to stay with his original decision.

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the fourth day’s play in the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch on Tuesday.

Hazlewood and skipper Steve Smith both rushed up to controlling umpire Ranmore Martinesz to query the process and the verdict.

Smith angrily confronted Martinesz, uttered some terse words then turned on his heel and shook his head in disgust. I got told that he was saying something to me.

Both on-field umpires had a word with Hazlewood, who remained furious and unrepentant.

Written notes were taken by the officials as substitute fielder Glenn Maxwell helped drag Hazlewood off the field.

Williamson fell for 97 after lunch.

“Test cricket is a tough recreation and tempers can rise and other people can get annoyed typically. If we did overstep the line, the match referee and the on field umpires and the ICC are there to adjudicate that”.

ICC boss David Richardson vowed past year there would be a “crackdown” on player behaviour.

Their reaction drew immediate criticism from the TV commentators on air at the time, Mark Richardson declaring the actions of the Australians as “intolerable” and Ian Smith condemning the players for showing their anger at Martinesz.

“The behaviour in some matches by some players was deemed to be unacceptable and not a good example to young fans”, Richardson said.
