A fire captain at the scene confirmed three people died at the scene. The 12-year-old girl shot at the home was transported to an area hospital and was deemed to be in critical condition. Police have not confirmed that at this time.
Meanwhile, crews were working a first-alarm fire at the home as well.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton spoke briefly at the scene of the shooting, praising the response of police and firefighters.
Firefighters have contained the fire inside the home. Firefighters could not make entry right away to give aid to the victims because of the shooter. “I’ve seen an active shooter inside a home while the house is on fire, shooting at officers that are trying to help victims who are on the line with us”.
At this time, it is unclear if officers shot the suspect or if he received a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A police officer suffering from smoke inhalation was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Crump declined to release names or specify the relationships of the individuals involved, but he said they were a family a five and that the shooter was the brother or son of the victims.
Details are sketchy about the incident unfolding Tuesday morning, but police Sgt. Trent Crump says there was an active shooter in the house and that it was on fire.
