In 2014, consumers spent more than $2.5 billion on hot dogs in U.S. supermarkets, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.
Hot dogs scream summer and barbecue, and that’s especially true during July when it’s National Hot Dog Month. Slide the hot dog off the skewer, stretch out the spirals, then grill. This seemingly “all-American” food was actually created in Frankfurt, Germany back in 1484.
It was just a few weeks ago we were talking about America, excess and our obsession with hot dogs. People often use hot dogs for cookouts and outdoor parties with their friends and consume as many hot dogs as they can.
And while today’s the day most folks are celebrating, it’s not really the official day, Janet Riley, the council’s president, told Delawareonline this week.
If you’re looking for something fancier, the Loews Don CeSar is selling gourmet hot dogs Thursday. She has made hot dogs for statesmen, mayors, councilmen, councilwomen, freeholders, politicians, teachers, students, construction workers, plumbers, truck drivers, police officers, professionals, lawyers, doctors, nurses, and even – sometimes – those who could not even pay for a meal. And believe it or not, mustard is top dog when it comes to toppings.
One of the most iconic symbols of American culture is also one of its most controversial. Kids prefer ketchup and other toppings might include sauerkraut, relish, and onions. From the Kansas City style to the Texas Dog, restaurants, street cars, ballparks or a backyard barbeque, hot dogs carry a personality of their own. Meantime, the people of Vienna (that’s Austria, not Missouri) point to the term “wiener” to make their claim as the hot dog’s birthplace. The Cubs play Round Rock at noon, so go and grab a hot dog for lunch.
Jazz up your hot dog with Mexican-inspired flavors.

Why: Because there’s no better way to make a crowd happy than with a hot dog stuffed with cheese and wrapped in smoky bacon. Not only is sauerkraut delicious but the fermented cabbage dish is super-healthy. Vital wheat gluten gives them that chewy texture so they hold up when you cook them. “I know I do and by how my customers are loyal, I think they look forward to it, too”.
