Professor estimates 8000 lead pipes in Flint

Flint’s switch to using the Flint River as its water supply in April 2014 was followed nearly immediately by complaints from residents about discolored, pungent water that had caused a number of ailments.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports on an approved petition to recall Governor Snyder.

Supporters of ousting the governor over the city of Flint’s water crisis will now have 60 days to collect about 790,000 valid signatures in order to get the recall on the November ballot.

The mayor did not specify an exact location but said the project would begin soon.

The governor’s office estimates there are at least 5,200 lead lines split among 55,000 properties, though another 10,000 pipes are unknown and will need to be individually inspected.

Meekhof, R-West Olive, initially resisted holding legislative hearings on Flint, but said Tuesday he thinks “enough work has been done on the investigatory” side to allow the committee to focus on public policy solutions.

The problems started when the city switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River.

That way we can bathe, shower, and brush our teeth without fear of lead contamination or any other unhealthy contaminants in the Flint system. “Politicizing this issue has not yet delivered any solutions for Flint’s families, but with passage of today’s $30 million, MI lawmakers have helped to aid Flint residents with almost $70 million in state funding in the past four months”.

The date of the first hearing has not been set, and Stamas said he does not anticipate convening the panel until after the Office of the Auditor General and Gov. Rick Snyder’s task force have completed their reviews. “People won’t buy homes or even feel comfortable in our restaurants until every lead service line is removed, and this is the most important step to returning confidence to government”.

People in the urban core of Kansas City told FOX 4’s John Pepitone that they can identify with government not caring about what happens to them, and that’s why so many people were eager to help out. Eleven percent of 175 samples exceeded the actionable level, including five homes above 100 parts per billion of lead.
