Moore, who began drawing cartoons while in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, died early Monday morning while in hospice care in his hometown of El Paso, his son Lito Bujanda-Moore told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Moore’s comics picturesquely documented the teenage adventures of red-haired, freckle-faced Archie Andrews and friends. During the 1960s, annual sales of the comics reached more than half a milion.
“I did one comic book a month”. He said his father was diagnosed with throat cancer within the past week and chose not to undergo treatment.
Seventy five years after Archie first appeared in Pep Comics in 1941, the redhead boy got a makeover this month to maintain his fan appeal among the contemprary readers. After the war was over, Moore collected funds through the GI Bill and began attending a school in New York for cartoonists.
By 1961 Moore felt the urge to be closer to Franklin Mountains of western Texas.
According to Victor Gorelick, Archie Comics’ editor-in-chief, Tom was very amusing and had a knack for putting together really great, hilarious gags and special pages when he worked at Archie.
Brad Wilson, owner of El Paso’s All Star Comics & Games, said Moore is a legend in the Texas city, yet many do not realize how much he has influenced comic book art. He added that Moore would frequent All Star as he looked for old issues of his comics.
Moore was invited by the company to help revamp Archie’s friend, Jughead, and he was part of the organisation until he retired.
After the tragic incident, fans of the 86-year-old cartoonist took Twitter to express their grief and flooded the social networking site with pictures and clips from the hit cartoon series.

Moore kept up with the Archie character even after his retirement, and was pleased when some of his work was displayed at the El Paso Museum of Art in 1996.
