Restoration of full water supply may take a week

Engineers of the Delhi Jal Board as well as their counterparts in Haryana were working to fix the damaged equipment at Munak Canal, said Mishra, adding that partial water supply has been restored in north Delhi, west Delhi and parts of central Delhi.

“Water supply in Delhi can be restored fully only after damaged Munak canal is repaired completely”.

Three water treatment plants – Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla – have started operating at 100 per cent capacity, said Mishra.

Terming the damage to the Munak Canal in Haryana “scary”, Delhi Water Resources Minister Kapil Mishra Tuesday said it will take at least 15 days for the capital to get normal levels of water supply from it.

Clashes between the protesters and government forces left 12 people dead before Jat leaders agreed Monday to end the demonstrations while negotiating with officials, and the army took control of the canal.

“Delhi is now being provided 700 cusecs of water through Khubru head”.

“Water in areas with narrow roads is being provided by DJB through rickshaws after placing trailer on nearest wide road”. In the last three days, many parts of Delhi have experienced severe shortage in water supply.

“Tankers will be diverted from the areas where we can provide piped supply to (the) areas like Dwarka and other parts of west Delhi”.

“For cooking and drinking purposes, I am buying packed water bottles”.

Residents in west Delhi said the water is very dirty and not usable.

Prior warnings meant that people had managed to save water, and tankers had been despatched to affected areas of the city, but that this has not been enough to make up for the shortfall.

Retired journalist K Jagannadha Rao said he and his neighbours scrambled to fill as many buckets and drums as they could after waiting 24 hours for a tanker to arrive.

However, the water situation in the city showed signs of improvement on Tuesday as 120 MGD of water was received from Haryana and treatment plants commenced operations following the Jat quota agitation which had hit the supply mechanism.
