Prosecutors Say Uber Driver Has Confessed in Deadly Kalamazoo Shootings

“The Kalamazoo community is reeling from these senseless acts of violence that took so many innocent lives from us”, said Jeffrey Getting, the county’s prosecuting attorney.

Getting says Dalton likely will face multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootings Saturday. MI does not have the death penalty.

“I would prefer just to remain silent”, Dalton told the judge when asked if he had any comment before the decision on bond.

Mellen sat in front.

Mellen said about a mile into the trip, Dalton got a phone call and that when he hung up, he began driving erratically, blowing through stop signs and sideswiping cars.

“We were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn speeding along and then finally, once he came to a stop, I jumped out of the vehicle and ran away”.

Passengers like Matt Mellen said Dalton drove like a maniac.

Uber doesn’t immediately deactivate drivers for erratic driving because of the volume of complaints.

Dalton graduated with an associates of applied science degree in law enforcement and criminal justice. Dalton’s background check was approved four weeks ago today, on January 25. He had given slightly more than 100 rides and had a rating of 4.73 stars out of a possible five. The Associated Press could not confirm those accounts.

Police have not yet provided a motive for the shooting, and Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is pessimistic that any motive that prosecutors do determine will offer any sort of clarity.

Sullivan said Uber is cooperating with police and has Global Positioning System tools that might help the investigation.

The Dalton family said in a statement: “There are no words which can express our shock and disbelief, and we are devastated and saddened for the victims and the families of the victims”, Michigan State Police said the shooting began at about 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT) on Saturday with a woman wounded outside an apartment building. A father and son were killed while looking at vehicles at an automobile dealership.

The third and final shooting took place a short time later, around 10:24 p.m., outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant. Four of the victims in the two cars died, police said. Police say he has no known criminal history. Prosecutors said in court that Dalton acknowledged being the shooter after he was read his rights. He expects some answers to emerge in court, but he doubts they will be satisfying.

“It was a little cold out, he was like, let me pull up to the door for you, if you need another ride call, I’ll be here all day so he came and got us when we were done”, says Reynolds. A spokesman in Detroit, Donald Dawkins, says there’s no indication that Jason Dalton was prohibited from possessing guns.
