Egypt’s ousted President Hosni Mubarak has seen many figures of era cleared of charges, yet his own fate remains uncertain.
The Illicit Gains Authority referred Nazif to criminal court after investigations showed that his wealth is extremely contradictory with his income and that he illegally used his post to make big money that exceeded 100 million Egyptian pounds (about 13 million dollars).
According to judicial officials, the court also slapped the former premier with a $6.8 million fine and ordered him to repay Egypt’s state treasury some $6.18 million.
Nazif had been acquitted in a separate retrial of charges of wrongfully awarding contracts for supplying new vehicle license plates.
Appointed by Mubarak in 2004, Nazif was dismissed and replaced by Ahmed Shafiq in January 2011 in an attempt made by Mubarak to calm protestors nationwide during the 25 January Revolution.
