A sheriff’s deputy was killed and two others were wounded Wednesday in a shootout 45 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado.
One note recalled Carrigan comforting a young girl after a chimney fire at her home and sending a firefighter to the house to retrieve her dolls.
Wirth knocked over some furniture, went back to his mobile home and got a.38-caliber revolver.
Carrigan is the 10th law-enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in 2016.
Wirth was arrested in Fort Collins in 1994 for shooting and killing a neighbor after a chess game.
“They are a brutal impediment to human progress a danger to us all”, one post said. Capt. Mark Hancock, a 21-year veteran of the office, was shot in the ear and brought to the same hospital in an ambulance.
“They had background information about the suspect in this case, but we’re just not going to talk about it at this time”, she said. The third deputy, a 20-year veteran of the force, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Records also show that in 2005, Daniel Spykstra was granted a permanent protection order against Wirth. Spykstra was running the program at the time.
“I told someone back when he threatened me, “if something insane were to happen in the community, he would be the first guy I would look at”, Spykstra said. “Nothing was his fault, it was always someone else’s”. He also had other ties to the community, including as an assistant football and baseball coach at Platte Canyon High School.
“He was always very supportive and wise beyond his years, a really good kid”, Spykstra said of Carrigan. It’s not known if the suspect was shot by deputies or took their own life.
As reported by Western Journalism, the sheriff of Carroll County, Maryland, wrote an open letter to President Obama last week calling on him to do more to recognize the sacrifices law enforcement officers are making in the country. “It’s the middle of winter in the mountains”.
In 2013, Martin Wirth sued Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, the state attorney general and a judge, claiming state foreclosure laws are unconstitutional.
One of the two surviving deputies – no names have been released – has a life-threatening injury and was undergoing surgery Wednesday afternoon, said Susan Medina, spokeswoman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The suit was dismissed in September 2015, and Wirth was ordered to pay court costs. In the post, Wirth writes that because he ran for state Senate in 2014 that he’s a target for police, and he thinks “police need to be abolished” and that “cops want me dead”.
