Florida senator Mr Rubio captured second place with fewer than 2,000 more votes than Texas senator Mr Cruz as final vote totals were reported. (This was a key question even after returns were in from the Democratic race.) Trump wasn’t supposed to win evangelicals in SC or here, really, but he won them in both. It was not clear whether they were Trump supporters or protesters.
“Right now what you have is a situation where the majority of the Republican electorate, the majority of Republican voters in this country do not want Donald Trump to be the nominee”, Rubio said. “Soon, the country is going to start winning, winning, winning”.
With his win, Trump claimed he could wrap up the nomination in two weeks.
“It’s gonna be an awesome two months”, Trump said. “We’re gonna bring in so much money and so much everything, we’re gonna make America great again folks, I’m telling you, we’re gonna make America great again”. Rubio was out to prove he can build on recent momentum, while Cruz was looking for a spark to help him recover from a particularly rocky stretch in his campaign.
On Tuesday night, Trump already had his eye on the calendar ahead, boasting as he declared victory that he was creeping up in the polls in Texas, which votes in next week’s Super Tuesday contest – a not-so-subtle dig at Cruz. Polls show the former first lady with a huge advantage among African-Americans, which bodes well for her prospects in the southern states that vote on Super Tuesday.
Darrell Issa, a Marco Rubio supporter, said on Wednesday that voters should remove Ben Carson and John Kasich from the ballot in their minds, saying they are “no longer campaigning and they have no pathway” to the Republican presidential nomination. Marco Rubio. Rubio wasn’t even in the state for the caucus results.

The South Carolina vote reduced a Republican field that included a dozen candidates a month ago to five. And there are only two people who have won one of the first three primaries, Donald Trump and us. Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich face dwindling time to push Trump out of the race by conventional means.

Cruz won the Iowa caucuses, but came in third in New Hampshire and in SC. Among those who said they were merely dissatisfied, Trump held a somewhat smaller lead over Rubio, with Trump supported by about 4 in 10 and Rubio by about a third. The Nevada Republican Party avoided its 2012 caucus debacle, in which polling results were delayed for days.
