New Arunachal CM Wins Floor Test in State Assembly
Political drama continues in the North-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh as several Congress legislators, who were supporting former chief minister Nabam Tuki all this while, switched sides and came forward to back the new CM Kalikho Pul. The nine Congress MLAs of the camp of former chief minister Nabam Tuki shifted their allegiance to Mr Pul yesterday and voted for him. It also said that Pul had cleared the floor test “which he (governor Rajkhowa) had advised” adding that the governor expressed confidence that Pul would rise to the high expectations of the people, particularly the common man and do everything possible to make all sections of the people contented. Mr Pul had the support of 27 Congress MLAs now in the Arunachal Assembly.

Worth mentioning, a political crisis surfaced in Himalayan state Arunachal Pradesh after a group of ruling Congress party showed discontentment over the then chief minister of the state Nabam Tuki and speaker Nabam Rebia.
Lowang, 52, who was elected from Namsang assembly constituency, filed his nomination as the ruling Congress in the office chamber of Deputy Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok.
With the joining of the eight MLAs, the strength of the Pul camp rose to 41, including 28 Congress members, 11 BJP MLAs and two Independents, in a House with an effective strength of 58, though the original strength was 60. The Supreme Court was considering pleas against imposition of President’s rule and also hearing petitions seeking examination of constitutional schemes on the scope of discretionary powers of the Governor.

The discontentment grew further after, Arunachal governor JP Rajkhowa advanced an assembly session from January 2016 to December 2015. It was lifted less than a month later on February 19.
