After an already higher than normal turnout the first week, this second week has seen an even greater turnout.
On Monday, a total of 1,280 voters went to one of the six early polling locations and on Tuesday 1,348 voted.
State election officials are preparing for a solid turnout during the first three days of early voting ahead of Tuesday’s presidential primary election.
Election board members said that the few minutes it takes will be worth it. “I think it’s important for everybody to participate because your vote counts”, said Merel Rowe with the Sequoyah County Election Board.
Providing for weekend voting hours the Saturday before elections in both March and November is now considered standard procedure by the Clerk’s office, and city voters should continue to expect to have Saturday voting opportunities for all elections going forward.
Republican and Democratic Party leaders say hotly contested presidential primaries have energized respective voting bases. The deadline to register to vote in the primary election has passed, but voters can register through April 25 to vote in the primary runoff election on May 24. Voters who arrive to the polls without an acceptable ID can still cast a provisional ballot.
“If you’re in line at 7, you get to vote”, Steidl said. If you skipped the primary, you can vote in either party’s runoff.
Voting in person is at the Richland County Board of Elections office at the rear of Longview Center, 1495 W. Longview Ave., Suite 101. A total of 499 citizens – or 10.3 percent of the 4,830 voters in the precinct – voted in the Democratic primary.
