Brian Sandoval, Nevada Governor, on SCOTUS Short List

Democrats have called on Republicans to do their job and hold hearings to consider USA president Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Nevada Republican Governor Brian Sandoval has already been rejected as a possible Supreme Court nominee – by his fellow Republicans. “The notion of being considered for a seat on the highest court in the land is beyond humbling, and I am incredibly grateful to have been mentioned”, Sandoval said in the statement.

On Wednesday, she accused Ayotte of “digging in behind (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell”, in making clear that she would not even meet with a Supreme Court nominee.

The newspaper said Sandoval, 52, is viewed by some Democrats as arguably the only candidate Obama could get past Republicans who’ve vowed to keep Scalia’s seat open until the next president takes office.

“I know the governor has done some good things but I sure hope the president chooses a true progressive who will stand up for the values and the interests of the people of this country”, she said at a campaign event in SC which holds the next Democratic primary on Saturday.

“The result of the Senate refusing to consider any nominee whatsoever from President Obama for the remainder of his term is exceeding its constitutional power, because they are effectively asserting the authority to initiate or not initiate the nomination process, and this goes far beyond the authority they are given”, said Edward Fallone, a law professor at Marquette University in Wisconsin.

Senate Republican leaders say they will ignore Obama’s choice, holding no traditional hearings on the nominee or votes. Recent presidents have avoided nominees from the political arena and both of Obama’s picks were primarily known for their legal careers. But liberal groups swiftly came out against the idea.

Though Obama insists he’ll put forward an “outstanding candidate” no matter what the GOP says, the White House is hard-pressed to offer a convincing scenario in which that person gets confirmed.

Notwithstanding the family drama, Reid and Sandoval have often been allies on Nevada-specific issues, fighting against nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain and for the construction of Tesla’s Gigafactory battery manufacturing facilities.

Democrats said Republicans were topping their own obstructionist high-water mark of three years ago, when their doomed effort to force Obama to repeal his own health care law helped produce a 16-day partial government shutdown.

“Does it become an issue about who he nominates?”

But Democracy for America, a grassroots political organisation founded by prominent Democrat Howard Dean, said Sandoval’s rightwing record might oblige it to call on Senate Democrats to block his appointment.

Last year, the governor signed a bill allowing noncitizens to obtain teaching certificates amid a crippling teacher shortage.
