NFL Combine: Jared Goff hand size questions could lead Cleveland Browns elsewhere

Especially for quarterbacks, because have you ever seen a person with sub-standard hands try to throw a regulation NFL football?

Of the 21 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2008, only Miami s Ryan Tannehill had hands that small, according to ESPN.

Another of the draft’s signal-callers, Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg, also measured with 9-inch hands.

“I just heard about that yesterday”, Goff said of his hand size.

“Yeah, I’ve played football my whole life and never had any problem with that, ” he said. As such, Goff’s hands won’t necessarily be considered small or a liability; they’ll just look small compared to those of Wentz. “No, I’ve never had a problem with that”. “I mean, Brady plays at New England, Aaron plays in Green Bay, Carson Palmer (has) played in Cincinnati for forever”. There is certainly reason to be concerned about hand size, but it felt like it took on a life of its own, becoming a running joke with 49ers fans.

“I’m not big on speculating about that”, Wentz said. “I think I’m going to improve a team the day I get there, honestly”. At least one GM doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal saying, “A guy could have tiny Burger King hands, and we’ll track him – if he doesn’t fumble, who cares?”

Despite having hands that some perceive as small, Goff still finished with 4,719 yards, 43 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

“That’s pretty good”, Goff said. “I won’t be able to tell you too much about who we really love”. By handling the jump in competition from the FCS to the FBS at last month’s Senior Bowl, Wentz already answered one of the biggest questions scouts had about him.

Let’s ignore that Goff has the best accuracy, touch, reps, efficiency, and productivity in college in bringing the Bears from one win to eight win in three seasons. As you learn, hindsight is the easier way to evaluate a draft class. We’ll do everything we can at that position and many others to figure out whether Goff, Wentz, Lynch, any of these other guys out there, (Indiana’s Nate) Sudfeld and others that are being discussed are right fit for the Browns and what we need from that position.

Goff acknowledged that he’ll have to make the leap from spread quarterback out of the shotgun to pro-style passer under center. Goff expressed confidence and excitement in making the move to the NFL.
