Donald Trump won Nevada’s Republican caucuses, racking up his third nominating contest in a row and solidifying his status as the GOP’s presidential front-runner.
Early results showed Mr Trump, who had been expected to win by a large margin, leading the pack of candidates with about 42 percent of the vote.
Colbert elaborated on how Trump’s bravado and Las Vegas showmanship go hand-in-hand, earning him more Nevada votes than Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz combined. Kasich and Carson could play spoilers as Trump, Cruz and Rubio, battle for delegates with an increasing sense of urgency. That makes it quite possible that Trump’s victory tour will continue on Super Tuesday.
“So far he’s been very nice and I think I’ve been very nice to him”, he said of Rubio, though he cautioned that he sees Rubio as “inexperienced” and “young”.
The state is the third contest Trump has won during the Republican primary and offers up 30 delegates to be awarded on a proportional basis.
Cruz in his concession speech said he looked forward to competing in 11 states, including his home state of Texas, on March 1, Super Tuesday, as a way of reviving his campaign.
Trump said his win was broadly based.
The race for the nomination in both major political parties has produced candidates who reflect a deepening anger among American voters with the nation’s political establishment and the gridlock for much of the Obama administration. But Cruz harked back to his win in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses to remind supporters that his is “the only campaign that has defeated Donald Trump is this campaign”. The Nevada senator participated in his state’s Democratic caucuses Saturday, but voted as “uncommitted”. But in many other states voting that day, Trump is ahead.
Colbert summed up Trump’s demographic wins in Las Vegas this way: “Donald Trump won a huge victory, taking every Las Vegas demographic: Elvis impersonators, white tiger handlers, even master illusionists”.
Behind Trump, Rubio beat Cruz by fewer than 2,000 votes, according to The Associated Press vote count.

Mr Rubio, already campaigning in MI as Nevada results rolled in, was projecting confidence that he can consolidate the non-Trump voters, saying “we have incredible room to grow”.
