Thompson hits game-winner, Oregon State tops Huskies 82-81

Washington Huskies head coach Lorenzo Romar complained after a buzzer-beating loss in Corvallis Wednesday that Stephen Thompson Jr. traveled on his last-second shot to sink the Huskies. The Huskies will likely need wins in their final two games of the regular season, against No. 13 OR and Washington State, and some success at the Pac-12 tournament in order to make it to the Big Dance.

Talk about a freshman coming through in the clutch.

Officials went to replay to confirm that the shot came before the buzzer, and that it was a 3-pointer.

Finally, the Huskies were able to take the lead, pulling ahead 72-69 after Andrews buried his fifth 3-pointer of the game. The senior also topped all Washington players with six rebounds and five assists, but too recorded five turnovers in the victory.

The senior from Portland hit two foul shots with 1:48 to play to give Washington their biggest lead of the game, 79-73. Oregon State is averaging 71.2 points per game and they are shooting 43.9 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 70.1 points and their opponents are shooting 42.9 percent. It was the Beavers first field goal in about nine minutes. Im sure those involved saw that, OK, yeah, there was a travel, OK, yeah, the clock that was just pretty cut and dry.“The point is that its just hard to see if its that blatant that that could have something to do with potentially ending our season or ending our NCAA tournament chances.”The loss dropped the Huskies to 16-12 overall and 8-8 in Pac-12 play.

“Well, I know she’s capable of that, and so it was neat to see that light bulb go on for her that night”. Josh Hawkinson added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Washington State, which has lost 14 straight.

Yet perhaps this a chance for an encore from Hunter, the “opportunistic scorer” who exploded for 19 points, including five three-pointers, against the Cardinal.

Washington had a devil of a time stopping OSU in the first half, surrendering 49 points. A road win at Oregon State would have been an ideal way to start a finishing surge, but instead it slipped through their fingers. “We gave ourselves every opportunity to win the game, but we didn’t get it done”.

In the second half, the Huskies started to change things up defensively, and it helped limit Oregon State to 29 percent shooting.

The Beavers responded with six straight points, first a Tinkle three and then a three-point play from Thompson Jr.

Each time it seemed the Huskies might take the lead, Oregon State responded.

Murray scored 15 and Chriss scored 14 for the Huskies. The Huskies and Beavers are each trying to play their way into consideration for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
