Elaborating further on how he was not involved in any conspiracy during the serial bomb blasts, Sanjay Dutt said, “I have been acquitted from all charges under Section 120 B of IPC relating to conspiracy”.

The case came to court in 2006 and Dutt was accused of accepting a delivery of weapons at his house from Abu Salem and co-accused Riyaz Siddiqui, who had also been implicated in relation to the Mumbai blast. Allotted prisoner number 16656, Dutt had had turned insomniac and hardly ate in the four days preceding his release.

He said, “I miss my father today”. Waiting for him inside the auto were his wife Maanyata and friend and producer of blockbuster “Munnabhai” Rajkumar Hirani as he drove to Pune airport to take an onward chartered flight to Mumbai. “I have got my freedom today after 23 years; I am happy to be back with my family and friends”, Dutt told Mirror. He spent 18 months behind bars in the early 1990s before being bailed, and was jailed once again in 2007 for six years on the same offences, though he did not serve the time until 2013.

On Wednesday evening, a small farewell was organised for Sanjay Dutt inside the high security barrack where he had been lodged. However, Akshaye Rathi feels that Sanjay Dutt will find it hard to play the role of a hero, and it’s best, if he’s seen as a character artiste. The actor, who was addressing media with his wife Manyata and kids, was asked about Salman Khan. Shilpa Shetty paid a visit to Sanjay Dutt with her husband Raj Kundra. She had read in the newspapers that Dutt was being released before completing his sentence, while other prisoners were not being granted parole even if their kin were critically ill.
