A female Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputy was attempting to make an arrest just after midnight in an unincorporated Goose Creek when a struggle with the suspect ensued, according to WCBD-TV. She had placed a passenger in her cruiser and was returning to take the driver into custody when a fight broke out. Kimber Gist, was shot twice below the protective body armor she was wearing, Berry said. He believes the deputy’s name will be released sometime Friday morning. Chief Deputy Mike Cochran says the female deputy is in stable condition at a local hospital.

The suspect was black and so is the deputy.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m., Gist pulled behind the Food Lion shopping center off Red Bank Road to check a vehicle she considered suspicious, according to another Facebook post.

The Charleston County School Department is working with Durham Bus Services to re-route any school buses that may need to pass through Durant Avenue. The three people got out of the residence and have told police that the suspect is injured and bleeding. The suspect was found dead inside of the home with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cochran said the officer had worked as a correctional officer for a couple of years and had been a patrol officer for about a year.

Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, North Charleston Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are assisting in the investigation. In May, Lt. Will Rogers was shot in the head during what officials called an ambush-style attack off U.S. Highway 52 in the Moncks Corner area.

Berry says investigators are still looking into whether the officer shot the suspect.
