Blasts in Nigeria kill at least 29 people in Gombe

A local source told AFP news agency the bombers were two young girls who had disguised themselves as beggars.

Earlier Red Cross said that a total of 30 people were killed and 105 injured in the multiple blasts.

It was gathered that the first two explosions occurred at a busy motor park.

“One thing I can volunteer now is that several people were killed in the explosions and many persons injured”.

The Gombe State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the incident and stated that details on the casualties were not available yet.

Witnesses reported hearing two blasts at both sites but lack of electricity made it impossible to say whether they were suicide attacks or homemade bombs left at the scenes.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts, but they bore the hallmarks of the Islamic militant group Boko Haram, which has previously targeted crowded bus stations, markets, mosques and churches during its bloody six-year insurgency.

Boko Haram has stepped up attacks in northern Nigeria after President Muhammudu Buhari took office in May.

A bomb explosion had occurred at a popular market on the eve of Eid-el-Fitr celebration when many people were doing last minute shopping for the festival, killing no fewer than 50 people and wounding scores.

Attacks have also been carried out in neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
