Trump says he can’t release tax returns because of audits

The issue moved to the top of the agenda this week after Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee – and no stranger to controversy over tax returns himself – said in an interview with Fox News that Trump’s tax returns may contain a “bombshell”. Yet there are many gullible conservative Christians who will agree with Trump’s assertion that he is being persecuted by the IRS for being a Christian.

“We’re in a different world, so Mitt is just trying to remain relevant”.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is resisting calls to release his tax returns as his chief rivals prepared to disclose theirs as soon as this weekend.

“No, I actually think that it’s a great thing when you can show that you’ve been successful and that you’ve made a lot of money and you’ve employed a lot of people”, Trump said. It may require a caveat that the returns could be modified after an audit, but tax returns aren’t held under lock and key during audits – and previous years certainly could be released. “I think people understand that”.

“I’m being audited now for two or three years, so I can’t do it [release returns] until the audit is finished, obviously”.

The broadsides came in response to Romney’s speculation that Trump has a “bombshell” in his tax returns.

“It’s a willingness to say ‘I’m asking for your trust, and I’m willing to provide this information to earn your trust, ‘” said Thorndike. So mine, unlike everybody else who never gets audited, I get audited every year-which I think is unfair.

“It’s no secret that they want to go for the biggest bang for their buck, so they tend to look for wealthier people with more complex returns”, Bell said of IRS priorities. “They’ve bene complaining about it for a long time”.

Trump said he has filed financial statements showing that he is worth more than $10 billion, and that voters can find out more about his finances from those statements than they can from tax returns. “It’s a series of transactions over an extended period of time that might affect way audits proceed in the future”, he said.

Trump, however, in his characteristic way slammed Romney and described him as a fool. It ain’t complicated. If Donald Trump hands over his tax returns later in the year, in the election, that the good folks in the media will have a heyday ripping him apart if there is anything in those tax returns.
