Mr. Christie said at a news conference in Fort Worth, Texas, that Mr. Trump “will do what needs to be done to protect the American people”.

Chris Christie endorsed Donald Trump on Friday, the highest-profile elected official to back the NY billionaire in his pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination. He also said that, during a commercial break, Trump asked for a full-length mirror: “Maybe he was trying to make sure his trousers weren’t wet”.

It was one of Rubio’s strongest attacks on Trump, as he put down Trump’s foreign policies, immigration views, and the legitimacy of his conservative views.

After what was likely the most raucous GOP debate of the year Thursday night, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is taking his biggest punches yet. Rubio and Cruz each went on the attack against Trump over several issues including taxes, immigration, Trump’s history as a reality-television host, and his business career.

Marco Rubio opened a rally in a Dallas Park Friday morning with a minutes-long barrage of insults and mockery targeting Donald Trump.

Mr Trump is “rewriting the playbook”, said Mr Christie, 53, who until two weeks ago was himself a rival of Mr Trump for the Republican nomination.

But Mr Rubio, a USA senator from Florida, trails badly in his own state.

Christie, who quit the presidential race following a dismal showing in New Hampshire, appeared with Trump in Texas.

“I speak for myself, but the governor is the leader of the Republican Party in the state of New Jersey”, Gaburo said.

“I believe our voters will choose the best Republican to be our nominee and ultimately our next president”.

“Why would I be any better if I was on the sidelines”, was his thinking, the adviser said. He called Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the US a “ridiculous position” in December.

“The man who riles up his crowds by calling Mexican-Americans criminal and suggesting Muslims should be banned from entering this country has limitless resources to run his campaign – and he also has a lead in the delegate count”, she added.
