Moviegoers pick ‘Revenant’ as Oscar best pic

The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday published its annual “Brutally Honest Oscar Ballot”, where DiCaprio is skewered for his portrayal of revenge-driven mountain man Hugh Glass in the frozen wilderness in 1823.

While The Martian and Mad Max are more crowd-pleasing fare, The Revenant’s noteworthy box-office haul – $165.5 million and counting – and DiCaprio’s performance probably won over moviegoers, says Fandango Oscar expert Dave Karger. Now, with his critically-acclaimed performance in The Revenant, many Hollywood insiders believe this is finally the year that DiCaprio will redefine himself from perennial runner-up, to Oscar victor.

Dicaprio, 41, was nominated for best actor on January 14 for his starring role in “The Revenant”.

Shortly after bursting onto the acting scene, appearing in films like “This Boy’s Life” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”, DiCaprio was nominated for his very first Academy Award.

The 2016 Academy Awards are just a few days away.

And if he doesn’t, he’ll still be Leonardo DiCaprio – but just 0 for 6. Despite the critical acclaim, DiCaprio did not win an Oscar that year. DiCaprio ate raw bison liver and was washed down a semi-frozen river for an Oscar.

“Most predictions are going with DGA victor Inarritu for The Revenant”, she told AFP.

While there have been past nominees who were predicted to win and ultimately lost, a DiCaprio loss on Sunday would be a complete shock. He won 44 times, including three Golden Globes, one Bafta, one Screen Actors Guild Award, one People’s Choice Award and two Critics’ Choice Awards.

Staff at The Odeon in Leicester Square are also backing Leonardo to win the award, and have changed the sign on the front of the cinema to “Leodeon” and placed a huge model of an Academy Award on a balcony behind it.
