“Today you sent a message in America when we stand together there is no barrier too big to break”, Clinton declared in her victory speech in Columbia, S.C. “Tomorrow this campaign goes national”. Sanders opted instead to turn his eye toward Super Tuesday states on March 1st and was campaigning in Minnesota Saturday night.
Mr Sanders acknowledged getting “decimated” in SC, but said on Sunday on NBC’s Meet The Press that his campaign is “looking to the future, not looking back” as the contests move outside the south. “We are not taking anything and we’re not taking anyone for granted”.
In total, 865 Democratic delegates to the party’s national nominating convention are up for grabs in the Super Tuesday contests in 11 states and American Samoa.
Still, the Palmetto State victory is an important one for Clinton and gives her a boost of momentum heading into Super Tuesday.
Observers say a victory here would also establish Mrs Clinton as the firm favourite among black voters, a key section of the Democratic electorate, and set her up to garner a big haul of delegates in Super Tuesday contests in the South.
Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx stumped for Clinton in Louisiana, hoping to increase turnout among black voters. He also edged Clinton among independents. The preliminary results include interviews with 1,461 Democratic primary voters and have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Although he’d closed a large deficit in polls in the state, Sanders still got just 26 percent of the vote in the primary, getting shellacked among among African-American voters by Clinton by a five-to-one margin. She won a decisive victory in SC.
The former secretary of state had maintained a sizeable lead over her socialist rival in the state, beating Sanders 60-37 in a recent Emerson poll.
Hillary Rodham Clinton swept to victory in SC, the fourth early nominating state for Democrats, making it harder for Sen.
Before South Carolina, Sanders and Clinton had the same number of delegates at 51 each.
She touched on issues including criminal justice reform, and thanked several black mothers whose children died in police-related incidents for their support throughout her campaign. “Sanders on running a great race”, Clinton said. Bernie Sanders in the New Hampshire primary earlier this month, there were plenty of people flipping their lids.
Sanders has built a massive network of small donors and has the money to stay in the race deep into the spring. Clinton will still have to finish the job of securing the nomination before the race will be in the books.
Meanwhile, Clinton is returning to SC for a primary night event following a day campaigning in Alabama.
“It’s just a matter of how many delegates we can get here and then it’s just going on from there”.

Clinton already holds a large lead among superdelegates, the party leaders and members of Congress who can support any candidate.
